They sell insulation kits at the local big box hardware store and I cringe every time I see them. The box weighs about 15 pounds, which doesn't sound like a lot. It is definitely enough to un-balance a garage door. The springs are calibrated for the weight of the door, and adding weight makes the door "heavy" for the springs. This means that if you pull an operator disconnect handle when the door is in the open position, the door is likely to descend much more quickly than you anticipate. People have been hurt when a garage door came down on them and the momentum knocked them over. Only add weight if the door springs can be re-torqued or replaced with springs of the proper pull.

Containment cables. When old extension springs break, the springs and cables become heavy whips that damage cars and even injure people. To solve the whipping problem, manufacturers now offer containment cables that run through the center of side-mounted extension springs. If you have extension springs and don’t plan to replace your door, make sure the springs have these containment cables, or have a professional install them.
You can choose from three basic types of steel door: (1) steel only; (2) steel with insulation on the inside; and (3) steel on both sides with 1-3/8 to 2 in. of insulation. Other features that add to the cost are thicker insulation and windows, especially insulated windows. The do-it-yourself tensioning systems also add a little to the door’s cost. Be sure to specify exactly what you want.

Safe automatic door openers. All automatic openers must now have an auto-reversing mechanism and photoelectric eyes located near the floor on both sides of the door (see photo). If the door is closing and the beam between the eyes is interrupted, the door will automatically reverse. If the eyes aren’t connected, the door won’t operate. For instructions on how to install a new garage door opener, see How to Install a Garage Door Opener.
There is no cost because Precision will send a technician to your home for a "repair estimate". A "repair estimate" allows our technician to evaluate your garage door and determine why it is not functioning properly. Then provide you with a repair estimate with the cost to get your garage door operating correctly. The choice is yours to proceed with the work on the repair estimate or if you decide not to proceed with the work then there is no cost to you.
To help prevent garage door problems from occurring, the Institute of Door Dealer Education and Accreditation recommends monthly maintenance, including testing that the garage door opener is operational and inspection of the springs, rollers, pulleys, cables and track. Wipe down the tracks, preferably with a microfiber cloth to prevent lint from being left behind. Also, make sure to keep all the metal moving parts lubricated. However, do not lubricate plastic parts. Never reuse an old track with new panels.
If you have a steel door, but want the look of a wood one, it is not necessary to change your entire garage door. Often, it may be possible to mimic the look of wood with skillful painting. Your local home improvement store may be able to provide good advice about the type of paint and brushes needed to mimic the look of wood for your particular door material.
My opener also has 2 wheels on the top of each side of the door: one with a big spool of line and the other just a pulley wheel. So I also lubricated the axles of those spools. You can watch closely while raising/lowering the door to see where the parts spin and move. Now my door runs much quieter, so I must have done something right! Hopefully this will reduce strain on the motor and make it last longer.
Hmmm...Intro to E12...looks suspiciously like a freehand angled cut on that contractor saw... Yes, the riving knife might save you from a dangerous kickback...but still a very bad idea.. Why not a 'safety segment' explaining kickback and why you should not do this (styrofoam demo, back side of the blade teeth rising up grabbing the foam and throwing it back at you...)
Test the door balance. A garage door should require only a few pounds of pressure to move it up and down. If springs wear out and lose their resiliency, a power garage door opener may need to work extra hard to lift the door. This can quickly wear out the motor on the opener. Replacing worn-out springs is usually a job for a professional technician.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing your knowledge. I just replaced our shower cartridge and our leak is FIXED!!!!!!! Your instructional was clear and concise. I did purchase 2 cartridges first, because I did not know the type it was and could not pull it out without the plastic cover it comes with. Fortunately, it was one of the two. By the way I'm a 63 year old woman. If I can do it, anyone with internet and a little patience and an hour can do it.....
“Every spring on every garage door will break,” says Jim Rice, owner of Broad Ripple Overhead Doors & Openers in Indianapolis. “After so many thousand times up and down, it gets metal fatigue and snaps. At least once a year, you should disconnect the garage door springs and lift the door up manually to see how well it’s balanced. Unless you hear metal screeching or something breaks, you don’t need us.”
In this article, we’ll tell you the difference between a safe door and one that’s unsafe. We’ll also give you the helpful tips you’re not likely to find in the manufacturer’s instructions to correctly, and safely, install a new garage door with a torsion spring and do-it-yourself tensioning. Installing a new, double garage door yourself will save you several hundred dollars and should take eight to 12 hours if you’re fairly handy. You can do most of the new garage door installation project yourself, but you should recruit help for removing the old door.
Steel entry doors - when a garage is being fitted with new doors, it is also a good idea to consider a separate single 3x68 exterior door with half-glass and locksets too. These may require some carpentry, but they are a good way to allow for some flexibility in the choice of larger garage door, and can ensure that the homeowner will have more than a single way in or out of the structure. The average costs for such a feature range from $250 to $1000 each.
With hundreds of moving parts that are all required to work together, it's no surprise that garage doors may need occasional repair and maintenance. Garage door repair services are also required in emergency situations, like when the garage door won't operate and the car is trapped inside or you've accidentally backed into the door when it was closed. Whether it's a specific repair of your garage door opener, a broken spring that needs to be replaced, or a bent or rusted track, The Home Depot's local, licensed service providers can get the job done quickly and efficiently.

John, the service tech, was able to show up 2 hours ahead of schedule which worked out great. He knew the problem and readily offered a fix to repair the contractor grade spring and roll bar to a heavier duty version. Repair was done in a short period time and I could not be happier with the end result. He was friendly and knowledgeable and cared about getting it done right. Very pleased with the work and warranty.
When you install a new garage door, replace all the hardware as well. If your automatic opener doesn’t have an automatic reversing system that includes photoelectric eyes, replace it. Doors with openers also require two extra pieces of hardware that you’ll see in Photo 4: a support strut (usually included in the door kit) and an opener bracket (not included). For doors with torsion springs located over the door, spend the $50 or so to have a garage door professional release the tension.
It's also possible that the circuit breaker, fuse, or GFCI controlling the door opener circuit has tripped or burned out. If you find that other lights or electrical circuits in the garage aren't operating, this is the likely cause, and you'll need to reset the breaker or GFCI or replace the burned-out fuse. If the circuit breaker or GFCI is tripping repeatedly, it's a sign that there is a short circuit somewhere in the system—possibly even the garage door opener itself.
