Step 1: Check the metal tracks inside the garage. Look at the mounting brackets that hold the tracks to the walls. If they're loose, tighten the bolts or screws at the brackets. Working inside the garage with the garage door closed, examine the tracks for dents, crimps, or flat spots. If there are any damaged spots, pound them out with a rubber mallet, or with a hammer and a block of scrap wood. If the tracks are badly damaged, they should be replaced.

Because garage door springs and openers can degrade over time, it’s important to occasionally test this safety feature. With the garage door open, place a solid object such as a 2-by-4 board or a cinder block where the door will close. Never test any safety feature using your or another person’s body. With the board or block in place, press the close button. If working properly, the garage door should close on the obstruction and immediately reverse the closing operation when it comes in contact with it.
First, we always provide a written estimate that is signed before doing any work, fully explaining what we'll do in plain English so you'll understand it. When we've completed the job, we walk you through and show you what's been done so you can be confident that your door was fixed right. We stand behind the job with the industry's best warranty and our 24 hour call back policy.
Step 5: Check for loose hardware, and tighten as needed. On swing-up doors, check the plates where the spring is mounted to be sure the screws are tight, and tighten any loose screws. On roll-up doors, check the hinges that hold the sections of the door together; tighten any loose screws, and replace any damaged hinges. Sagging at one side of the door can often be corrected by servicing the hinges. If a screw hole is enlarged, replace the screw with a longer one of the same diameter, and use a hollow fiber plug, dipped in carpenters' glue, with the new screw. If the wood is cracked at a hinge, remove the hinge and fill the cracks and the screw holes with wood filler. Let the filler dry and then replace the hinge. If possible, move the hinge onto solid wood.

A common material for a new garage door is steel sheet formed or stamped to look like a raised panel wooden door. Steel doors are available in uninsulated, insulated, and double skin steel. A design mimicking carriage house doors has become popular since early 2000s, and many manufacturers clad the exterior of a steel door with composite, vinyl boards, or other trim to give it the appearance of wood.

Carriage: These doors mimic the look of doors found on old carriage houses in the days of horses and buggies. Because of their rustic look, they are often favored in the West and Southwest of the United States. The doors swing open like oversized French doors and hang from jambs on hinges. With their unique look, they create an area of visual interest for your home and are quite energy efficient. The downside is they require a considerable amount of clearance to work properly. Because most carriage garage doors are largely composed of wood, you may need to replace deteriorating or rotting door materials. The average cost for carriage garage door repairs is $133.

Noisy garage doors cause all kinds of problems, especially for anyone who has to sleep above or next to the garage. Fortunately, most noisy garage doors can be fixed with a combination of routine maintenance and the replacement of a few parts. If the basic maintenance tips described above don't quiet a noisy garage door, it's possible that the door's hinges need to be replaced.

Center and level the first section after you install the brackets. The door must be level even if the floor isn’t, so use shims under the section to level it. The rubber gasket on the bottom section will fill the gaps created by an unlevel floor. To hold the level in place, tape it to the section. To hold the section in place, lightly toenail a 16d nail into the frame and bend it over the section. Add brackets and rollers before setting them in place and stack one section on top of another, toenailing as you go up.

Annual maintenance. Make an annual check of all nuts and bolts on rails and rollers to make sure they’re firmly tightened. Check the condition of all cables to make sure they’re not worn or frayed. Lubricate rollers and springs with a garage-door lubricant (see How to Fix a Noisy Garage Door for maintenance and problem-solving tips). The door should operate smoothly and be properly balanced. Check the balance by disconnecting the opener and lowering the door halfway- the door should hold its position. If it doesn’t, adjust the spring tension or replace the springs.
On Monday afternoon the spring on our garage door snapped when the door came down after we had just backed out. As we were heading to a doctors appointment I did nothing about it until Tuesday morning. I called Precision Garage at about 8:30 am and their technician Aaron was at out home before 10am. He did a complete inspection and told us what was needed and also gave us an estimate on replacing the door as we have been thinking about that for sometime. He was very thorough and courteous. He explained everything to us. We decided to have new springs put in and order a new door. The springs were in within 20 minutes and we now have use of our door. They said it would be about three weeks for the new door to arrive and then they will install. We were blown away that we could get such quick service and so professional. There was no pressure and he went into detail about each kind of door that was available. Precision Garage is truly a great Thanksgiving gift for us. I'm anxious for the new door to come and I know we will love it.read more
Garage door manufacturers typically produce garage doors fitted with torsion springs that provide a minimum of 10,000 to 15,000 cycles and are guaranteed for three to seven years. One cycle is a single opening and closing sequence. Most manufacturers offer a 30,000 cycle spring. However, it is important to remember that if the weight of the garage door is increased by adding glass, additional insulation, or even several coats of paint, the life of the torsion spring may be greatly reduced. Additionally, springs at highly humid environments, such as coastal regions tend to have a significantly shorter cycle life, due to the corrosive cracking.

2. The safety sensors may need adjustment or realignment. Near the bottom of the door track on both sides are electronic eyes that require a clear line of view between them. If the sightlines are clear between the eyes, the door will close smoothly all the way to the floor. However, if anything is blocking the sightline, or if the brackets holding the electronic eyes are out of alignment, the door will fail to descend all the way. In most cases, the door will stop or reverse, and lights will flash to tell you there is a problem.

Automatic doors require not only the installation of a heavy door, but the motor and cables as well. Automatic doors are much more common now because of their convenience, but in a case such as the heavy wood door, they are a necessity. A strong motor is required to pull up a heavy door. However, automatic doors are not without their faults -- they quickly become a manual door when the power goes out.

"Nathan was courteous and professional. He arrived on time and installed the garage door opener with no probelms. He tuned up our old garage door opener and installed it on our third car garage. He also added the new garage door opener to our cars for home link. I will call on Nathan for all my garage/ garage door opener needs and recommend him to my friends and neighbors."
John, the service tech, was able to show up 2 hours ahead of schedule which worked out great. He knew the problem and readily offered a fix to repair the contractor grade spring and roll bar to a heavier duty version. Repair was done in a short period time and I could not be happier with the end result. He was friendly and knowledgeable and cared about getting it done right. Very pleased with the work and warranty.

When I called to schedule the repair service, I was transferrd 5 times and spoke with 6 service reps. Each rep was very confused by my request to get my garage door repaired. One rep actually told me that Sears doesn't repair garage doors. I had to tell her that Sears installed the door. When I finally found a rep who could schedule my service, it took one week for the appointment.

Fiberglass and vinyl garage doors are composite units, combining a steel core behind a fiberglass or vinyl skin. They have also polyurethane insulated base sections, or other type of foam insulation. These premium doors can match steel garage doors, and be a realistic imitation of wood (namely fiberglass units), but they may be more expensive than steel units.

Response time was excellent. Alex was punctual, friendly, and knowledgeable. I had a 23 year old opener that I needed to replace. He came out and replaced it. It didn't take too long and he was professional in every way. I hope this new unit gives the service and longevity of the old one. We will see. From my experience with Precision Overhead Garage Door Service and Alex, I would use them again and I recommend them.read more

An extension spring counterbalance system consists of a pair of stretched springs running parallel to the horizontal tracks. The springs lift the door through a system of pulleys and counterbalance cables running from the bottom corner brackets through the pulleys. When the door is raised, the springs contract, thus lifting the door as the tension is released. Typically these springs are made of 11 gauge galvanized steel, and the lengths of these springs are based on the height of the garage door in question. Their lifting weight capacity can best be identified by the color that is painted on the ends of the springs.

I had Precision Doors come to my 1937 home to quote a new door to replace the original manual one. Service tech was prompt, patient, listened to my wishes to keep the house "old" in aesthetics, yet new and improved with the highest quality door they use. Joe, my tech, was phenomenal! He offered great advice and solutions to my situation, and even a better price all in. Confidence and trust was built in our very first meeting. The door was painstakingly installed with so many variables of old and new combinations. But Joe was amazing, and the door looks and operates flawlessly. Precision Door's top tier motor and door are the quietest I've ever witnessed. I feel so happy with my dealing with them. It was a great purchase and of the very best quality. One and done! And they offer a lifetime warranty on all of their work. It really can't be better. Have Precision Doors come to your home and you will be pleased that you did.read more

When you install a new garage door, replace all the hardware as well. If your automatic opener doesn’t have an automatic reversing system that includes photoelectric eyes, replace it. Doors with openers also require two extra pieces of hardware that you’ll see in Photo 4: a support strut (usually included in the door kit) and an opener bracket (not included). For doors with torsion springs located over the door, spend the $50 or so to have a garage door professional release the tension.

Clint and James called and checked if my son had any problem with them showing up earlier than planned . No biggie there, they came, they examined , and they brought my sons busted garage door back up to a fully operation system . While the cost was more than myself or my son expected , the results were undeniable . A complete system review showed many worn or weak spots in his 14-15 year old bearings and such . They replaced what was needed and door works great . Next stop my house , all I needed was a replacement door seal . After talking with the tag team , I decided to go for the full Monty , and get an update to my bearings etc. Just to protect my wife in case I am not around to jack hammer a door open with a busted spring . Which would likely not work anyway ! Longer story short ...great outfit , good team , nice guys , job well done !! If you need any garage door work ...Precision Overhead Door is the place to call . Thanks very much for a great job guys ....Tedread more
